Let me start by saying: I do not have a Pinterest-perfect house. There are usually crumbs under the table, someone’s sock in the hallway, and a Lego hiding in plain sight that I will step on barefoot. But somehow even with four kids, busy days, and a never-ending pile of laundry; our home doesn’t totally fall apart.
Here’s the honest truth: I don’t deep clean every day. I just don’t.
What I do instead? Small habits that work like little guardrails, keeping the chaos from taking over.
So if you’re in your “survival mode” era but still want a home that feels livable and kind of sane, here’s what’s working for me right now.
1. I Reset the House, Not Deep Clean It
Every night (okay, most nights), we do a 15-minute family reset. Dishes go in the dishwasher, couch pillows get re-fluffed, and toys get tossed back where they belong. I light a candle or spray a little room spray when we’re done it makes everything feel finished, even if the baseboards haven’t seen a rag in a month.
2. I Clean the Kitchen As I Cook (Mostly)
Cooking for a crew means the kitchen explodes fast. I’ve trained myself to rinse, wipe, and toss while something’s simmering. I’m not a clean-as-you-go queen, but I try to stay one step ahead of the mess. No shame if there’s a splatter on the stove we just wipe it… eventually.
3. I Pick One “Focus Spot” a Day
Instead of trying to clean the whole house, I pick one area that gets the extra love:
Monday = kitchen
Tuesday = bathroom
Wednesday = laundry catch-up
Thursday = kids’ rooms
Friday = floors
It’s five minutes of extra effort in one place, which feels doable and way less soul-crushing than an “everything” list.
4. I Let the Kids Help (Even if It’s Sloppy)
My kids are fully capable of unloading the dishwasher, putting away their laundry, and resetting their own bedrooms. Is it perfect? Nope. But it’s done. And more importantly, it’s not me doing it.
5. I Don’t Touch the Playroom After 8 PM
This one’s personal sanity. I used to clean up after they went to bed, now I leave it until morning and remind myself: they’ll mess it up again tomorrow anyway. My energy is better spent doing literally anything else. Like sitting down.
6. I Keep Cleaning Supplies Where I Use Them
I’m way more likely to wipe a bathroom sink if the spray and rag are right there. Every bathroom has its own mini cleaning stash, and it makes quick wipe-downs so much easier.
7. I Celebrate “Good Enough” Clean
A made bed with wrinkled sheets? Still counts. Shoes shoved into a bin instead of lined up? Still better than the hallway floor. I’ve found peace in “good enough.” This house is lived in, not staged.
The Bottom Line?
I keep things afloat with small, doable rhythms not deep cleaning marathons. Because honestly? I’d rather spend my day living in our home than constantly trying to make it look like nobody lives here.
I’d love to know, what are some little things you do every day to keep the chaos under control? Let me know in the comments.
